Overview

ASD was established in 1988 by the U.S. Embassy and prominent members of the Qatari community to meet the growing needs of students in Doha, and now, 30 years later, ASD has become one of the premier American international schools in the world. The diversity of cultures and backgrounds in our community is an exciting strength of the school, and the world-class facilities provide the best possible spaces for our committed teachers and coaches to inspire and educate students to become positive, active global citizens. Technology, music, art, physical education, theater, library, classroom and common spaces all communicate a message that learning is the core purpose and highly valued at ASD. With the support of the Board of Trustees, the Board of Directors, the Leadership Team and the highly supportive parent community, ASD provides comprehensive programs and education which are second to none in the region.

Governance

The American School of Doha (ASD) is a non-profit educational institution governed jointly by a Board of Trustees and a Board of Directors. The Board of Directors consists of a 12 member Board, three of whom are elected by parents and the remaining nine members appointed by the U.S. Ambassador. The officers are Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, and Treasurer. The Board maintains school policies and appraises the school’s performance. The Board establishes and approves a yearly budget, ensures the school’s goals and objectives are met and evaluates the performance of the school according to the school’s mission, vision, and strategic plan. The three committees are Finance and Facilities, Strategy and Policy, and Governance and Personnel. There are also ad hoc groups that are formed on an “as needed” basis. The Board meets monthly during the school year, both as a whole board and in working committees. Dates, times and locations are posted in ASD’s newsletter, Sahifa. Regular meetings consist of Executive Sessions and Public Sessions.
