The Staffroom Podcast with Chey and Pav Episode 26: The Trouble with School Closures

In Episode 26, Chey and Pav talk about some of the challenges they faced this week when having to prepare for shutting schools down for preventative measures surrounding COVID-19. They discuss some of the Social Emotional learning that is affected when students have a hard time understanding what is going on. Student stress and anxiety can sometimes be too much to bear, and they need a lot of reassurance that all will be fine. As teachers, Chey and Pav talk about their responsibilities in ensuring that students are receiving information, and are being supported in terms of their Social Emotional learning.

They also discuss many of the ways they have been supporting students before leaving for a long period of time with regards to school work. Chey and Pav talk about several things they did on the last day of school to support students with their learning. From allowing them to borrow books and writing supplies, to providing paint and canvas paper so that they can engage in self-directed activities while off.

The duo also talked about the many equity challenges they face as a school in an underprivileged area with respect to e-learning. As much as they would like to be able to send students home with online work, they are unable to because students would not all have access.

Chey and Pav introduce Vernon Wright for their 3 Enlightened Minutes guest.

They talk about a few online ways to keep in touch with students while away, and provide them with some supplementary work.
